For this project, I was assigned to create a table setting including my interpretation of a plate, cup, utensils, placemat, and nameplate inspired by the life and work of an artist. The artist I was given was the French-American sculptor and painter Niki de Saint Phalle. I was incredibly inspired by her huge body of work and I incorporated aspects from all of her 3 main eras. Saint Phalle opened up about suffering from abuse in her home as a child, especially surrounding meals, so with this project, I focused on portraying mealtime as a joyful experience and not a dreadful one.
Saint Phalle's Work
Process
I used foam clay over a tin foil base as my method of sculpture. After the clay dried, I painted over it it with acrylic paint and embellished with tiling. Finally, I painted the tablecloth to bring the whole experience together.
